Capay Valley

Yolo County, California

Capay Valley sits in northwest Yolo County between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Capay Hills, about 80 miles northeast of San Francisco. The AVA covers roughly 150 square miles, with about 25 acres planted to vines across a handful of small producers.

It is warm and sunny, with hot, dry summers softened by cooling evening air from the Coast Range and influences from the Sacramento Delta and San Francisco Bay. The growing season runs 150 to 250 days, heat accumulation ranges from 3,100 to 4,748 GDD, and annual rainfall is 15 to 40 inches.

Soils are mostly silty clay loam on alluvial fans, mixed with clay, creek rock, volcanic ash, and calcareous formations. Growers farm Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Tempranillo, Viognier, Mourvedre, Marsanne, Sauvignon Blanc, and Petit Verdot. Warm days allow for full, expressive ripening, cool evening breezes help preserve freshness in the grapes, and together the climate and soils support resilient vineyards that produce expressive, balanced wines.
