Squaw Valley-Miramonte
Fresno County, California
Squaw Valley-Miramonte is a 44,690-acre American Viticultural Area in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Fresno County, California, established in 2015. It lies about 40 miles east of Fresno, between the San Joaquin Valley and Sequoia National Forest, at elevations of 1,600 to 3,500 feet.
The steep, rocky hillsides are mostly worked by hand. Vineyard slopes run 15 to 40 percent, and plantings face south and southwest to capture warmth. Night winds flow downhill from the mountains to cool the vines. The Region IV-V climate, among the hottest of the five Winkler bands, brings about 267 sunny days each year.
Soils are the granite-based Vista, Sierra and Auberry series, high in potassium and low in free calcium and boron. The area is planted to a mix of varieties including Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, plus reds such as Aglianico, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Mourvedre and Petite Sirah.
