Tehachapi Mountains
Kern County, California
The Tehachapi Mountains AVA sits at 3,600 to 5,400 feet in Kern County. Its climate is Region II, the second-coolest of the five Winkler bands, with about 2,762 growing degree days of heat, roughly 12 inches of annual rainfall, and a 198-day growing season.
Deep, well-drained soils formed in mixed alluvium on old fans and terraces carry sandy loam topsoils over clay loam subsoils. At this elevation, high UV light thickens grape skins and boosts phenolic concentration. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Zinfandel tend to produce deeply colored, firm-tannin wines.
