Balderdash Cellars

Balderdash Cellars was founded in 2011 by Christian and Donna Hanson, who started making wine in their garage, then opened in a basement beneath a Subway sandwich shop in Pittsfield, before settling on State Road in Richmond, Massachusetts. The winery sits above Richmond Pond in the Berkshires, with views of the surrounding mountains, a budding vineyard, an amphitheater, a restored barn, and indoor and outdoor tasting areas. Since the Berkshires are not a grape-growing region, Balderdash contracts with growers, primarily in California's Paso Robles and Edna Valley, and directs farming and harvest decisions. The fruit is crushed or pressed at a custom crush facility, shipped frozen in 55-gallon drums, and fermented in Richmond with help from a volunteer crew of family and friends. The lineup includes whites such as Chardonnay, Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling; rosé; and reds including Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Primitivo, and blends, many released under playful, story-driven labels. The tasting room does not take reservations for groups under 25 and seats are first come, first served; larger groups must reserve. Visitors may bring food, leashed dogs are welcome, and rotating food trucks and a few local beers on tap are also available.
