Blue Dog Wine

Blue Dog Wine Co. is Linn County's first winery, owned and operated by Sarah and Tracy Johnson in downtown Mound City, Kansas. The idea took shape around 2016, and after three years of research and permitting, the winery officially began in 2019; it opened in March 2020. The name honors the couple's Blue Weimaraner. Sarah makes all the wines and meads on-site. Though Blue Dog is not a vineyard, it sources fruit from Kansas growers whenever possible and supplements with fruit from other trusted growers. The lineup has grown from six releases to more than 15 wines and meads, spanning dry to sweet, red and white, fruit wines, traditional grape wines, and seasonal specialties. In 2023 the Johnsons opened The Coyote Tasting Room in the restored former Union State Bank building on Main Street. Walk-in tastings include a keepsake glass and five wines chosen by the guest, with table service and notes on each pour. The tasting room also serves food, cocktails, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks, hosts live music and events, and can be rented for private gatherings.
