Bow & Arrow

Bow & Arrow is a Portland-based winery founded by Scott Frank as a Loire Valley-influenced take on the Willamette Valley. After moving from New York in 2001 and working as a wine buyer and later as assistant winemaker at Cameron Winery, Frank started the label in 2010 when a fruit offer set things in motion. Today the operation is a subterranean winery in Northeast Portland that sources fruit from a small network of growers across the Willamette Valley, including sites in the Eola-Amity Hills, Yamhill-Carlton, and Chehalem Mountains. Several partner vineyards are certified Biodynamic or farmed organically and dry-farmed, and Frank favors a low-intervention approach aimed at drinkability, using concrete, old barrels, stainless steel, and puncheons. The wines center on cool-climate grapes such as Melon de Bourgogne, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc, with smaller lots of Garganega and Cabernet Sauvignon. Standouts include Rhinestones, a Gamay-Pinot Noir blend made in the Cheverny style; Willamette Valley Melon; semi-carbonic Gamay; and the everyday Time Machine blends. Visiting is tied to membership: the Bowyer-ist wine club includes a scheduled private tasting and tour at the winery for the member and up to four guests each year.
