Deep Roots Winery

Deep Roots Winery is a family-owned urban craft winery in Golden, Colorado, just west of Denver at the foothills. It was founded by siblings Teara and Carol Ann Johnson along with Teara's husband Steve Walters, growing out of a childhood family tradition of stomping grapes and fermenting berries with their grandfather and brother Rudy. After Rudy died unexpectedly in 2014, the family moved to Colorado to realize the dream the three siblings had long shared. Steve, a former nuclear scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Teara now lead winemaking. The winery makes small-batch wines, one to four tons per varietal, from grapes sourced within twenty-four hours of harvest on the West Coast and from Colorado growers. The list includes Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Malbec, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Barbera, and Colorado blends, plus infused wines, hard lemonades, and ciders. Guests taste from twenty wines on tap in an indoor tasting room seating more than eighty-five or on a patio seating more than forty with views of Golden. The winery also hosts private events, semi-private mezzanine gatherings, guided tours, barrel tastings, and hands-on blending experiences.
