Lava Cap Winery

Lava Cap Winery is a third-generation family-owned winery located in the heart of Apple Hill and the Sierra Foothills, within the renowned El Dorado AVA. The winery's estate vineyards are situated at an elevation of 2,700 feet, making them among the highest in California wine country. Lava Cap is known for crafting wines from rare volcanic soils formed by ancient ash flows, resulting in intensely aromatic wines with deep fruit and vibrant mountain character. The Jones family, comprised of geologists, selected this site for its prime volcanic soil, which they believe is particularly well-suited to growing fine wine grapes. Their winemaking philosophy emphasizes expressing the elegant and complex varietal character from each block of their vineyards, achieved through artisan production techniques that result in full-flavored wines with depth. In the vineyard, Lava Cap employs sustainable practices and integrated management strategies to cultivate high-quality fruit while protecting the environment and maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Visitors can discover the winery's handcrafted wines in their tasting room, which is open daily from 10am to 5pm (except for certain holidays).
