Native Vines Winery

Native Vines Winery, owned and operated by Darlene Gabbard and her family, is the first American Indian-owned winery in the country. The Gabbards are members of the Lumbee tribe, and the winery sits on 36 acres of rolling pasture and woodland in Lexington, North Carolina, bordered by Highway 150 along the old Waxhaw Indian Trading Trail and Indian Grave Creek. Arrowheads can still turn up in the soil. Winemaker Darlene Gabbard produces a full line of vitis vinifera wines and fruit blends in an Olde World style, including what the winery calls the first line of Green Tea Wines, made with organic tea. The portfolio ranges from dry whites and reds such as Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon blends to semi-sweet and sweet wines including peach Chenin Blanc, Barbera, and fruit wines made with apple, blackberry, blueberry, and strawberry. Tastings are $15 and include six wines of the guest's choice plus a souvenir stemless glass, with limited indoor seating and an outdoor patio. The property also hosts free evening music on the lawn and offers event space for weddings and private gatherings.
