Old House Vineyards

Old House Vineyards is a family-owned estate in Upper Moutere, in the Nelson region at the top of New Zealand's South Island. Ian Bathgate, his wife Jeanne, and their two sons own the property; Ian has collected wine since he was young. The vineyard covers around 17 hectares of unirrigated Moutere clay gravels, sheltered by hills to the east, south, and west, with the Tasman Sea to the north providing a moderating maritime climate and high sunshine hours. The plantings are roughly half Sauvignon Blanc, with the remainder split about evenly between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The lineup includes a stainless-steel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc, the barrel-fermented Kaho Sauvignon Blanc made in an old-world Fume Blanc style, the wild-yeast One Tree Chardonnay aged for 11 months in French oak, and the Falcon Hill Pinot Noir. The label features the New Zealand Fantail, or Pīwakawaka, a bird commonly seen flitting through the vines.
