Old North State Winery

Old North State Winery was founded in 2002 by Ben Webb, who studied viticulture and enology before planting a 10-acre vineyard on his family farm in eastern North Carolina and later adding 18 acres in the Yadkin Valley. The winery works with Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin, Riesling, Petit Manseng, and native Carlos and Nobel Muscadines, and operates what it describes as one of the most technologically advanced wineries in the United States. Rather than locating at the vineyard, Webb sited the winery in downtown Mount Airy to help revive the area's economy. It occupies a former hardware store built in 1890 on Main Street, retaining original pressed tin ceilings and oak floors. Visitors can take tasting tours Tuesday through Saturday, order wine flights, and dine on locally grown food prepared by chef Logan Young. The winery also hosts private events in its Main Floor and Barrel Room spaces and, since 2010, produces Fish Hippie wines alongside apparel and accessories.
