Oso Libre

Oso Libre Winery produces award-winning, artisanal estate wines in limited quantities on the west side of Paso Robles in the Adelaida District AVA. The 15-acre vineyard sits on rugged, calcareous limestone hills exposed to sunshine and ocean breezes, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Primitivo, and Mourvedre planted across distinct soil types and elevations. Much of the Primitivo and Cabernet Sauvignon grows on a steep hillside of Linne-Calodo soil, while Mourvedre occupies lower ground in sedimentary alluvium of calcareous clay, an area the team calls their "Bendicion" grapes because frost is a constant battle. The winery farms sustainably, using specific grapevine clones and 1103 Paulsen rootstock chosen for drought-prone hillside conditions, a 10-by-6-foot vertical trellis system to limit erosion, and a livestock program plus cover crops for nutrient and weed management. Frost protection includes a wind-generating machine and micro-sprinklers deployed near harvest or bud break. Visitors can drop by the estate to taste the boutique wines, and the calendar includes events such as wine and chip pairings, burgers on the property, and a premier dinner.
