Pelican Ranch Winery, a family-owned winery established in 1997, specializes in Burgundian and Rhone-style wines sourced from select Coastal vineyards. Located in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains, the winery's cellar cave provides a constant, cool coastal influence that allows for the production of elegant and flavorful wines. The winemaking approach emphasizes proven old-world methods combined with modern strategies, resulting in limited-production bottlings (200 cases or less) of high-quality wines. Each vineyard-select bottling is carefully crafted to showcase the unique characteristics of its respective region. Phil Crews, Ph.D., a research professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, serves as the head of winemaking and brings his expertise in bioanalytical techniques and natural products chemistry to the winery's operations. His passion for wine and teaching is evident through his course on "Introduction to Wines and Wine Chemistry" and his recent research on smoke taint in wines. The winery's team includes experienced associate winemakers, including Zane Tellez and Neil Able, who work alongside Phil to create a range of twenty wines each vintage. Visitors can experience the winery's offerings through its Saturday-only tastings (12-5 PM), which feature a special tasting of past and present vintages in the CELLAR TREASURES program on August 29th.
