Rock of Ages Winery

Rock of Ages Winery & Vineyard sits on the Moore family estate in Hurdle Mills, in southern Person County, North Carolina, where tobacco was farmed for generations and Ernest Moore made communion wine for local churches in the early 1900s. Kevin Moore, who grew up on the farm, and his wife Kimberly opened the winery in 2006 after Kevin planted the first three acres in 2003 and expanded the vineyard to 26 acres. Kevin studied enology and viticulture at Surry Community College and serves as the winemaker. The winery grows both native Muscadines and vinifera and hybrid varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Lemberger, Petit Verdot, Touriga, Chardonnay, Chardonel, Petit Manseng, Traminette, and Viognier. The portfolio spans sweet Muscadine wines, dry reds and whites, and fruit wines made from real peaches, blackberries, cherries, blueberries, and apples. The Old English-style building, with Italian and Western lodge touches, overlooks the vineyard and a four-acre lake. Visitors can taste wines without an appointment, with tastings organized into dry white, dry red, sweet, and fruit categories, and the tasting room sells cheese, salami, and snacks.
