The winery was founded in 2006 by Philip and Sheryl Jones, who drew inspiration from their experience growing grapes and making wine in Nelson, New Zealand. They sought to replicate the cool climate conditions of New Zealand in the Columbia Gorge, where they could grow varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay Noir, and Pinot Noir. The winery's vineyards are situated on Underwood Mountain at an altitude of 1850 feet above the Columbia River, providing a unique terroir for their wines. South Hill Winery is open to visitors on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from April through October, with no reservations required for parties under six.
