Verterra Winery

Verterra Winery grows its grapes on estate vineyards along Michigan's Leelanau Peninsula, where Lake Michigan breezes, long northern daylight and the peninsula's soils shape the wines. The lineup centers on estate-grown whites such as Riesling and Pinot Grigio and cool-climate reds including Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Its dry whites have won Best Dry White Wine at the Michigan Wine Competition four years running, and its Pinot Grigio took Best of Class at the largest competition in North America. The founders started Verterra after years of exploring wine and wondering how vines produce such varied character. They chose sloped sites with suitable soils, planted proven clones and rootstocks, and farm with minimal chemical use, small yields and hand pruning, tying and harvesting, picking by both science and taste. Visitors can taste in the original Leland tasting room or at The Ridge at Verterra, an estate vineyard site overlooking Lake Michigan that also hosts weddings from Memorial Day through mid-October.
