Villa Matilde is a winery located in the Campania region of Italy, situated between Rome and Naples, approximately an hour's drive north of Naples along the coastline. The area was once known as "Falerno" or "Ager Falernus" during the ancient Roman Empire, renowned for its high-quality wine production alongside olive oil and vegetables. In the 1960s, Francesco Paolo Avallone, a lawyer and enthusiast of ancient wines, revived the legendary Farreno wines by reviving indigenous varieties with ancient Roman genotypes, including Sewels (rich), Fortis (powerful), and Aldens (fiery). The winery's vineyards stretch across the hills on the slopes of Mount Roccamonfina, where a unique microclimate is created by the surrounding mountains, resulting in abundant sunlight and minimal rainfall. This dry land forces vines to grow deep underground, absorbing minerals from volcanic calcareous soil produced by ancient volcanic activity on Mt. Roccamonfina. Today, Villa Matilde is managed by Francesco Paolo's son Salvatore and daughter Maria-Ida, who have expanded the winery with new vineyards, including Tenuta Rocca dei Leoni and Tenute di Alta. The estate's wines are a testament to the rich history and terroir of Campania, a region known as "Campania Felix" in ancient Rome.
