Von Stiehl Winery

Von Stiehl Winery, licensed in 1967 and based on the Algoma waterfront along Lake Michigan just south of Door County, is Wisconsin's oldest licensed winery. It produces wines, regional hard ciders, and small-batch spirits distilled and bottled on-site. The lineup ranges from Napa-style reds and dry reds aged two or more years to an original Door County cherry wine and young fruit wines. Fruit comes from the estate Stony Creek vineyard six miles north in Door County, from California's Clarksburg, Lodi, and Sierra Foothills AVAs and Washington's Red Mountain AVA, and from fruit juices sourced in New York, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Wine is made in a 10,000-square-foot production facility across the street from the main building, with Italian custom red-wine fermenting tanks and tanks built in Sauk City, Wisconsin. Reds are aged in French and French-American hybrid oak barrels inside historic 1800s underground limestone cellars. Visitors can tour those cellars, taste wine, cider, and spirits, and relax on the harbor-view terrace; the property also hosts live music and events.
